Unpopular opinion: Most tech startups without a CTO co-founder are broken by design (Personal)
Why? : Because the CTO is a core piece of the puzzle when you are building a TECH company (otherwise, it is just a company, without the tech part? 😉)
– If the CTO does not have the freedom to push back the business and product need to invest in tooling, testing, scalability, and resilience, the company will just fall down the dangerous “shipping” hole
– And don’t tell me otherwise, saying your company does not work like that, this happens all the time (I won’t say of course there are no exceptions)
– Most companies without tech cofounders put a tremendous amount of pressure on their CTO & engineers, asking them to ship and ship until the codebase becomes a mess.
And then, what happens? I’ll tell you:
– 1. 🏃. Engineers start leaving
— It’s not enjoyable to work on a horrible codebase where decisions were rushed, and with a huge pressure to ship more
– 2. 📉 Velocity decreases
— Often what happens is the company reaches a point where things are such a mess, it is not possible to move forward without a complete rewrite, which will make the company lose hours of work that could have been potentially prevented
– 3. 🏋️ Scalability issues start appearing everywhere
— Rushing decisions also prevent making the right trade-offs in terms of scalability, and karma won’t miss you on this one!
-👂 There needs to be a technical founder that is listened to, to warn about the potential problems ahead that could prevent the company from growing correctly.
– I also think there is a big correlation between companies that have nearly 0 tests, and the lack of a CTO cofounder at the table.
– Every day, I make the tradeoff to push testing, tooling, and important refactoring instead of new features when I find it useful.
– I can only do it because I am my own boss on the tech side (of course, we discuss those subjects with my business associates and our head of product).
This also works because I am in the adventure for many years, and won’t easily leave because I’m heavily invested in the company. Thus, if I don’t invest, I will get what I saw a few years down the road.
🙅 If my 2 business cofounders were my bosses, trust me, I would have never been able to convince them to invest in making our app more robust and improve things such as developer tooling (for the best of course).
To all business founders out there, listen to your CTO challenging you and pushing back decisions, they are often warning you about real future problems (but sometimes they will also be wrong of course).
